FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)?
Q. Advantages & Disadvantages of buying from an authorized dealer
A. The clearest benefit is that they can offer you the complete manufactures warranty. For many brands, these dealers will have access to the entire line of that brand. However, due to limited display case space, you will usually just see a small portion of the different styles. If they did not have the watch you wanted, they would have to order it for you, often with a deposit down... And then you are getting the watch sight unseen. If the watch is at the main US distributor, they should be able to get it in for you pretty quick, but if the watch needs to be ordered from Switzerland, you might end up waiting a while. Certain styles are in high demand, with a low production so these dealers will have a waiting list... And if your local dealer is not up in their sales performance with a particular brand, the manufacturer will often divvy up their high demand watches to their best-selling stores.
Authorized dealers should have more information at their disposal from the manufacturers, but that does not mean they absorb it. Nothing can beat having a great in-store experience where you ask a dozen questions, and the salesperson honestly and knowledgeably answers all of them. That is what you should expect when you go into these stores and pay retail. However, salespeople are often on commission, so honesty can get left to the side, or they will just make something up if they donot know the answer.
To find authorized dealers in your area, check the manufactures website. Some brands have very few stores in the states.
Q. Different Types of Watch Movements Available
A.
Automatic Watches: A rotor on the movement keeps the watch powered by the motion on your wrist. If worn everyday, an automatic watch will run for life (or until it breaks). Automatic watches generally have 100s of parts inside their small cases. If an automatic watch has stopped, it is best to wind it via the crown 20-30 times to give it a good kick start. If not wound manually, wrist motion is generally not enough to keep it running accurately.
Quartz Watches: The quartz movement became common for watches in the 70s. They are powered by a battery and need little maintenance except for a battery swap every year or so. They are highly accurate compared to mechanical watches.
Manual Wind Watches: A manual wind watch must be wound every one or two days by the crown in order to run. Even with that perceived inconvenience, they are still produced in Switzerland and can even be found on watches well over Rs. 2,00,000. Many collectors find them highly desirable. It is easier to make a thinner and lighter watch without the self-winding mechanism. Some unique movements can reserve up to 8 days of power and will usually have a power-reserve indicator on the dial.
How to avoid getting ripped off?
A. The most obvious way to guarantee you are getting an authentic product is to visit an authorized dealer of the brand. These authorized dealers can not offer the value from reduced pricing that many consumers look for. Also, the industry is known for high employee turn-over, so many of these salespeople are not as well educated as they should be for if you are paying retail.
Many people are aware of much better deals that can be found on authentic gadgets on the Internet... But that can be scary since you usually must pay for the product ahead of time, sight unseen.
Message forums, auctions, and on-line dealer websites are the 3 primary sources for finding deals on the web.
On dealer websites, look for things like testimonials, site reviews, and ratings such as those found on E-Bay or Pricegrabber. Another tip is to use Who Is to investigate the domain name or Alexa to check the page rank.
Message forums are generally individuals selling their products. Some of the best prices can be found here, but these sellers are usually the most difficult to build trust with. Also, these individuals will generally need payment with some sort of cash equivalent, so there is no recourse from the credit card companies if the watch does not show up... Or if it arrives in a condition other than they stated... Or if it is the wrong thing all together.
The message forums are a good place to find respectable dealers, or post a question about a dealer you are interested in dealing with. Rotating inventory and a regularly updated site are also good signs. Watch out for sites that have pictures that appear they were scanned from a catalog. Unique pictures of the products, from different angles shows what you will actually receive if you order from them... And that they actually have the products in their possession. Another thing to watch out for is pieces with the serial number removed.
One thing to keep in mind, the credit card companies are on the consumers side. If there is a genuine dispute, you can generally get the funds credited back to your account.
Q: What do I look for in a quality of a Diamond?
A: When you evaluate a Diamond, check for the four Cs cut, color, clarity & carat weight. You need to follow these primary guidelines carefully for the above characteristics to determine the value of a Diamond. We suggest you add a fifth C confidence in your Jeweler, only an experienced & reliable Jeweler will guide & help you select a quality Diamond.
Q: What does Carat mean?
A: CARAT is the unit of measuring the weight of a Diamond. In actual terms, 100 points equals one carat. By a common weight measure, one carat equals to one fifth of a gram. Being a precious stone, Diamonds are weighed on a scale with a balance so sensitive that even breathing can tip the scales.
Q: How important is the color when you buy a diamond?
A: Color determines the price of the Diamond. Completely colorless and icy-white diamonds are very rare and consequently, prices extravagantly. Color variations are a matter of degree. Such changes are rare and can only be detected by experts under special light. Also, Diamonds with a strong natural color are very rare, called Fancy Colors, such Diamonds command a collectors price for their color as well as their size & cut. To see the true color of a Diamond, look through the side of the stone against a white background.
Q: What does clarity have to do with Diamonds?
A: Chances are if a Jeweler arranges six bright, sparkling Diamonds in a single line on a velvet pad, you would consider them to be similar. However an experienced Jeweler would rate each diamond differently & find each one of them to be unique. In a sense, every diamond is one of a kind. In the process of crystallizing Diamonds out of carbon, nature left miniscule birthmarks specks, bubbles and feathers in most Diamonds. These natural characteristics are called inclusions. Their number, size and position under 10 power magnification determine the clarity of a diamond. The value of a diamond soars depending on the scarcity of inclusions. Such inclusions can be removed in the cutting process. Skill & craftsmanship of a high order are required to remove as many inclusions as possible while at the same time maintaining the original carat weight. After all, weight & clarity determine the worth of a Diamond. You may have heard of flawless Diamonds. It refers to Diamonds that have no visible inclusions when viewed under 10-power magnification. Truth be told, there are very few flawless Diamonds.
